gratitude

it's the end of another week! actually, with my odd-houred job, the end of my week is now saturday afternoons.  this has taken a bit of getting used to since i grew up in a religion that kept saturday as the sabbath.  even though i left that religion, i continued to keep that spiritual practice and it has been an interesting process to decide where i want to set my boundaries.  as sad as i was to lose my day devoted to loved ones and self-reflection, i'm thankful it happened because it helped me figure out what is most important to me {i'm not planning on working saturdays much longer}.

here are some other things i'm thankful for:
* serendipitously discovering a pretty bridge {the shakespeare bridge} tucked away in our neighborhood.
* everything working out perfectly with an event which i was totally anxious about.
* clearing out some stuff from our home {de-cluttering feels so good}.
* discovering this very cool and very helpful writing tool.
* that i found a job which pays me {i have to remember this is a good thing, even though it's not in my field}.
* that the mr.'s car was safe whilst parked out of sight on another street, and is now back outside our house {there are a lot of car jackings in our neighborhood}.
* the sun coming out to play during our june gloom.
* finding this super cute dress at ruche, a perfect purchase with the last of my gift card money.

and here are some things which i'm looking forward to over the next week:
* getting to know my work program well enough to stop practicing every day.
* having the mister come home.
* the romantic date we're planning which will involve this film.
* hanging out with brandi one last time before she moves to NY {sniff!}.
* the free pasadena music festival {i love free! especially with great bands like these.}

and now i shall leave you with this ridiculously cheerful playlist to enjoy over the weekend.
happy friday!

what are you thankful for?

reuse & recycle

being extremely poor means there's NO chance i'll be going shopping for new clothes anytime soon.  at first i was miserable about this, but then i told myself, "self, didn't you just write a post about being creative with the clothes you already own as a way to be sustainable? i think it's time you read what you write."

so i took to my closet and began playing dress up.  turns out, i discovered all sorts of fun new looks with the clothes i already own, plus a couple additions from the mister's side of the closet {he realized a part of living together meant me acquiring some of his things right?}.  i also pulled out a few dresses that i never ever wear and went to town with my seam ripper.  muah-ha-ha!

the result?...

new combo of clothes i already own: button-down striped shirt with floral skirt.

borrowing from the mister: dannon's shirt with my skirt.

totally deconstructed: took the top off this ugly dress {hello, that peach/tan color on my skin? blech!}...
before:

 ...for a super cute, high-waisted skirt.
after:

a whole new remodel: i've had this dress for years {this was at our friends' wedding 3 years ago}.
before:
it got way too stretched out to properly fit me as it was, so i removed the straps, let the triangle fabric flop over and voila! a strapless dress for those sunny summer days at the beach...
after:

...or add a belt for another chic high-waisted skirt, perfect for coffee dates.

have you breathed new life into anything old and worn out lately?

ps - this is our new fence, sans termites.  isn't it gorgeous?!  plus, our whole yard now smells like cedar.

the brewery art walk

one of the coolest aspects of living in our neighborhood of echo park {other than the awesome coffee shops and being surrounded by musicians, actors & other creative types} is our proximity to the arts district in downtown LA.  this weekend we took advantage of our next door neighborhood and visited dozens
of open art studios at the brewery.

the brewery is the world's largest art complex, packed full of amazing live/work studios.  twice a year they have an art walk where artists open their homes for the public to come view the art being created there.
here were some of the scenes from sunday:

{"machine" - a musical instrument by church of art}

 {metal key tree by sandman creations}

 {art car ready for burning man!}

{an outfit for arting - shirt: sf thrift store, skirt: ruche, shoes: bc footwear, pocketwatch necklace: lunashineshine, t-shirt bracelet: made my me}

my most favorite studio, by far, was psycho girlfriend's. these girls were all wearing handmade 50's style dresses with giant polka dots. inside the polka dots were faces of old black & white tv stars, and each girl's dress was a different color. i wish i snapped a photo of them, because they were great!
here are some pics from their studio:

 {why yes, this IS a dress made from binder clips}

 {"this sign is not for sale" priced at $400.00}

it was so much fun to be surrounded by all that creativity! there was great people-watching, networking with other artists, and of course, it was super fun to see how people created homes in these warehouse studios.  can you imagine how amazing it would be to live in a community of other
artists packed in old breweries like this? what great energy!

weekend wonderfulness!

the past few days have been just gorgeous here in sunny southern california!  after last week, which was a really rough week for my ocd, and then with the tragedy in japan, i decided i needed to make the most of life so i filled my time with wonderful things:

on saturday i had a really lovely, relaxing day of writing and reading.  then that night, we headed out to a super fun birthday party.  we had the most delicious spread of cheese with a blind wine taste testing.  i am horrible at identifying flavors in wine, so i took the ole michael scott approach.

on sunday the mister and i headed down to sunset junction to roam around the furniture and home stores.  there are so many cute shops down there, plus amazing coffee and gelato.  yum!  later that night, the mister decided to make healthy, but incredibly delicious, muffins {wheat, apples, oats, honey, cinnamon,... i think that's the gist of it}.

and i did the whole i'm-hanging-out-with-different-people-so-i-can-wear-the-same-outfit-two-days-in-a-row thing:

{shirt: hand-me-down from my step-mom, skirt: hand-me-down from a dear friend, earrings: given to me straight off the ears of my best friend at my pre-wedding party, shoes: i actually bought these! from target}

then last night we met up with friends at wurstkuche, an amazing sausage grill in the arts district, which the mister has been raving about for years.  now, i'm a vegetarian {no rattlesnake or alligator sausages for me}, but this place has some delicious veggie options as well.  i got the vegetarian smoked apple sage with belgian fries.  oh heavens, it was so good! i'm glad i exercised a little extra and skipped an entire meal so i could indulge guilt-free.  you should definitely check it out if you're in LA.

the rest of this week, i will be continuing my big search for a job, any job!, preferably one doing therapy, even more preferably one that PAYS.  i also have some plans to socialize with friends and make merry music this weekend.

i hope you are all happy and well {and not at all late to everything because of the time change}!

ukulele chic

hello everyone! while i'm running errands in san francisco, i thought i would leave you with a little outfit post.  i'm not sure if you are aware of this, but ukulele's are much more fun to play when you get all dressed up.  i may or may not still play in my front yard, pretending i'm performing in front of a cafe full of people, just like i did when i was a little girl.

my current favorite thing to do is play covers of non-ukulele style songs on the ukulele.  anything goes really, so long as  it catches my fancy and uses the chords i know.  but i still go back to the first song i learned on the uke, she & him's "gonna get along without you now."  it's so much fun to play!

dress: forever 21, circa 2005
undershirt & leggings: thermal underwear from REI
shoes: chelsea crew
earrings: forever 21
belt: my best friend's costume closet, circa high school 1998

i hope everyone is having a fabulous week.  happy thursday!

gratitude!

what a week!  it started off as one of those long, busy, overwhelming weeks, but ended with a bang!  we got all dolled up, hung out with good friends, and set up some big plans for february.  life can be exhausting, but it has a way of cooking up some interesting surprises to compensate.

here are a few of the things i'm grateful for this week:
* making progress in my ukulele playing {hard work finally paying off}.
* photoshoots with tatiana {no more self-timer... yay!}.
* choosing to spend my time in really wonderful ways.
* all the fun projects on the horizon {we got several calls this week asking us to be involved in some upcoming creative projects. more on that soon!}.
* this beautiful and inspiring post.
* getting to talk to several favorite friends who live far away.
* broccoli with trader joe's artichoke & parmesan dip {yum!}.
* receiving the awesome water bottle i won from tay's giveaway {hooray!}.
* all the random, unexpected doors that the universe opens when you state an intention.
* finally going to the edison!
and
* getting to be featured on tiffany's dinner party series! go check out her beautiful blog, dancing branflakes, and spend some time perusing if you've never read her blog before. it's one of my favs!

{there were some busy days this week where i just wanted to be cozy, you know? thankfully i had this
to wear ~ sweater: thrift store in SF, striped boatneck top: h&m, jeans: urban outfitters, shoes: bc footwear}

what are you thankful for this week?

frankie say relax!

on sunday, we did something we never do.  we woke up, grabbed breakfast at a favorite cafe, and cozied up with a movie!  it was the perfect way to spend a rainy sunday morning.

so far, this week has been pretty busy... and it's only tuesday!
such is life i suppose.  but all this busyness, plus the fresh memory of our lazy sunday,
has definitely got me craving more cozy down time.

{warm woolly sweater: h&m, baby doll dress: gap, belt: f21, jeans: urban outfitters, boots: target, earrings: an old etsy shop which, sadly, has closed.}

some of the things i love to do when i'm super busy, stressed, or overwhelmed are:
put on my favorite sweater
play sweet sweet music
read a totally frivolous magazine
draw with pastels
sip tea
do yoga
watch an indie film
look at pretty pictures on j'adore
twirl in a swooshy dress
read my favorite blogs
play with chloe cat
watch a fire in the fire pit
window shop on ruche and modcloth

and just in case you were wondering, "why kim, what sort of music do you listen to when you have this downtime?," i've included my favorite relaxing playlist of the week.
i recommend you listen with some tea, soft lighting, and maybe even a bath.
 enjoy!

what is your favorite way to relax?

ps - i LOVED all of your comments on yesterday's post about the hug campaign.  a huge hug to you all!

yippee skippee!

this weekend was pretty quiet around these parts.  after such a rough ending to our week, we needed some down time.  the one outing we did have was saturday night when we hung out with our friends before they left.  these particular lucky friends are spending the next several weeks touring europe with the LA Philharmonic.  they live such a hard life don't they?  we had amazing wine & cheese, played with their kitties, and laughed a lot.  it was exactly what we needed.

{very affordable, lazy saturday outfit ~ ruffle shirt: h&m, shirt tunic: target, belt: forever 21, jeans: urban outfitters, shoes: patagonia, little stone earrings: made by my friend echo!}

we did have a bit of excitement though when the mister finally fixed the computer! there was a very dramatic "emergency room" type revival.  i may have said "it's been three days, i'm calling it..." and he may have shouted "not on my watch! come back you bastard!" and after a very long dramatic pause, the computer flickered and beeped back to life.  there was much rejoicing, "HOORAY!!!"

in other news, the mister's interview went well, but we still won't hear anything for several weeks.  i really appreciate all of your well wishes last week, and i would appreciate it even more if you continued to keep your fingers crossed, and send your positive job thoughts and prayers our way.

happy tuesday!! anything exciting happening for you this week?

tagged!

there have been a ton of awards going around blogland right now, have you noticed?  i was the recipient of a couple of them.  so without further ado...

first, the lovely ana, from the world through my eyes, gave me the stylish blogger award, where i am to divulge 7 facts about me. sooo...

1. i have synesthesia.
2. i don't own a television.
3. i LOVE to watch live breakdancing.
4. i kept my last name when i got domestically partnered.
5. i am a classically trained soprano.  although i haven't sung in several years - i miss it!
6. i am terrified of heights.
7. i'm allergic to corn and all corn-related products {and i'm pretty sure america is trying to kill me because there's corn in EVERYTHING!}.

{seeing sunshine! dress: ruche, pocket watch necklace: lunashineshine, little stone earrings: made by my friend echo!}

also, the soon-to-be, brand new momma connie, from all about connie, tagged me with 10 questions:

1. why did you create the blog?
originally, i wanted to start a blog that kept my family in the loop of the goings-on in my life.  they live on the east coast and i on the west, so it was tough to keep in touch.  this seemed like a good way for my mom and grandma to see all of our adventures {and my ever-changing hairstyle}.

i had also just begun grad school to be a therapist, and i was feeling inspired to create a corner of the blogosphere that was focused on making the world a better place, either by spreading the word of good causes, or helping encourage people to live the best life they could, to have their own fantastic adventures, and to make healthy choices, even if it seems hard.

lately, i've also been feeling more and more passionate about using the blog to help others see that there are SO MANY options in life. this began with sharing our wedding and our choice to do a domestic partnership in lieu of a marriage, which i know have both inspired others to embrace their non-traditional love.  there is NO ONE RIGHT WAY to do anything - no one right way to have a relationship, be an adult, or experience spirituality.  in our western culture, we often get strong messages that we must do things in a certain way, but that's just not true.  we all find happiness in different ways, and that's beautiful!

2. what kind of blogs do you follow?
i'm a big fan of those blogs that feel personal.  you know, the kind that show real pieces of who the blogger is in a way that is genuine and allows meaningful connections to be made.  those are usually the ones where i find great ideas that are right up my ally {restaurants to try, movies to see, music to listen to, etc.}.  those are also the kind that translate into great real life friendships if you have the benefit of meeting in person at some point.  hooray friends!

3. favorite makeup brand?
i love bare escentuals mineral makeup.  i don't use very much makeup in general, so this stuff lasts me a good long time.  it feels great on my face and never looks "cakey."  you know what i'm talking about.  plus, it's good for the skin.

4. favorite clothing brand?
i hope i don't lose followers over this, but i really don't care about brands.  i never spend more than $30 on any item of clothing {except for my wedding dress which i got for $400}, which means i never ever ever buy name brand items.  i also have bought most of my clothes from a select few san francisco thrift stores, so who knows what those brands are!  i guess the most clothes i own that come from one place, are all from h&m.  the first time i went there was about 8 or 9 years ago when i went to london.  i was so excited to find several h&m's when i moved to san francisco, and i've been shopping there ever since.  cute clothes, great prices, totally my style!

5. your indispensable makeup product?
honestly, i go many a days without wearing makeup at all.  i really don't have an indispensable makeup  product.  but if i had to choose one thing, and one thing only, to wear for the rest of my life, it would be blush.  i love adding a little color to my face.

6. your favorite color?
this question always makes me laugh because it makes me feel like i'm in grade school again.  i don't have a favorite color.  i have colors that i like a lot and colors that i absolutely abhor. having synesthesia makes colors very emotional and musical to me.  i will never ever ever wear red because it is a dirty, evil color and makes me really anxious {my maroon sweater is as close as it gets for me}.  but i find certain greyish blues and greens to be rather soothing and lyrical.
7. your perfume?
um... does rubbing the fragrant flowers from our meyer lemon tree count?  :) if not, "heavenly" by victoria's secret is what i wear when i go out sometimes.  but usually i forget to add perfume.  it's a wonder i even remember deodorant!

8. your favorite film?
these questions are so hard to answer, because how can you decide between so many great films? but some of the films i like most are: the goonies, the royal tenenbaums, the red violin, big fish, sixteen candles, lars & the real girl, the life aquatic with steve zissou, fight club, amelie, strange brew, the darjeeling limited, being john malkovich, & so i married an axe murderer, just to name a few.

9. what country would you like to visit and why?
again, there are so many tied at the top of my list, but i'm going to say australia.  the mister's family is from there and i have a lot of friends who've lived there at one point or another.  it sounds just like my kind of place!

10. make up the last question and answer it.
um...
self: if you had unlimited resources, what kind of party would you throw this weekend?
me: why, what a good question you!  i would have to say, throw a huge blogger party where everyone in my google reader could all get together in real life and have a grand ole time!

thanks ana & connie!  both of these ladies have fantastic blogs and are definitely worth checking out.

anyone else want to play along?

art shows & poetry readings {my weekend}

this weekend was a pretty full one with all sorts of free artsy fun that sort of just happened.  don't you love when life works out that way?  it's like hiring Fate as your personal secretary.

friday night a few of us headed out to a gallery opening at gallery 1988 to see "is this thing on?," an artistic tribute to the best comedians of our time.  there were SO many great pieces! the exhibit will be there until saturday, january 29, if you live in the area.  if not, you can check out the prints and original artwork on their website.  there were so many beautiful, hilarious, talented pieces, but my absolute favorite was probably this one {although it was a close running with these flight of the conchord plushies}:

conando suave:
{artwork by ken garduno}

on saturday night, we had a friend who was in a poetry reading downtown at art share LA.  there were so many great poets, much better than the small-time coffee shop poetry readings i've been to in the past. some of the poetry made me want to dance with the words, some of the poetry seemed to paint beautiful images in the air above the poet, and other poetry was just plain laugh-out-loud hilarious.

this was the friend we went to hear:

after the poetry reading we headed over to a house party and got to know a bunch of new friends.  it's funny how i seem to stay out much later since living in los angeles.  i tend to think 10 pm makes such a great bed time, but over the past few months i've been out so much later on so many nights.  i guess this city will do that to you.

also, i may or may not have worn this same outfit to both events. but hey, it was with completely different people on each night. don't judge.

{sweater: h&m, jeans: urban outfitters, boots: target, pocket watch necklace: lunashineshine, leather feather earrings: crooked sister.}

how was your weekend?

swim! until you can't see land.

i feel like i have been so productive this week with my do to lists and with my personal growth.  i still have so many unanswered questions and all sorts of life paths before me from which i could choose, but i'm taking it all in stride.
2011 is definitely off to a great start!

{the neighbor kitty paying me a visit while i work in the yard.}

lately, i have been listening to a lot of joyful, fun, & inspiring music.  this is the music that has been energizing me to get stuff done, explore new ideas in life, and remain hopeful for good things that i know are right around the corner.  so i thought it was fitting to share these songs in my first playlist of the new year.  some of it is french canadian, some swedish, some british, and some good ole american.  some of it i have posted about a long long time ago, but thought it was perfect for life at present.
i hope you enjoy!

{grooveshark can sometimes be a little finicky.
if it stops playing, just refresh the page and start where you left off.
sorry for the hassle!}

do you have any music that you find especially inspiring?

new year's!!!

this weekend we ended the old year and started the new just the way we like it ~ good food and great friends!

okay, true confession time, our new year's eve actually started out in true form for us, being that we changed our plans only about a million times through the day before we eventually joined our efforts with some of our new favorite friends and formed a pretty fun party, if i do say so!

two of our friends drove in from the inland empire {brave girls!} and we all headed over to our other friends' high-rise apartment near the grove.  these two just got engaged a few days ago, so we had a lot to celebrate for the new year {congrats you crazy kids!}.  at midnight we ran up on the roof and saw fireworks in every direction over the various neighborhoods of the greater los angeles area.  it was magical!

friends!

my cute new dress {thanks to a fabulous christmas gift from the in-laws!}:
{dress: ruche, cardigan: h&m, tights: piedmont boutique, shoes: chelsea crew, pocket watch necklace: lunashine on etsy.}

on saturday i had a peaceful, quiet morning with some deep thinking and writing.  it's always good to start the year out with some reflection and goal-setting, so that's just what i did.  in the afternoon, the mr. and i created art together, then spent the night with some of our other favorite friends.  our evening was full of music, chocolate fondue {mmm!}, and the best wedding gift ever {made by my radio producer friend who recorded all sorts of fun things from our wedding day and put together an amazing aural collage of sound clips & music.  it was perfect!}.  over the weekend we also took down our christmas decorations and rearranged the furniture.  it feels so fresh and new in our apartment!  and that was the weekend.

how was your new year's?

all kinds of lovely!

this weekend was filled {FILLED!} with parties, people, & art ~ just how i like it!

friday night was a blast. we headed over to a holiday party at our friends' house and met dozens of interesting people in the biz. our friends, elia & maranatha, are talented filmmakers. maranatha even won an emmy for her documentary about pediatric heart surgeries in egypt. it was so much fun getting to hang out with them and meeting their interesting friends.

the renegade craft fair was at a small park close to my home, nestled in a little valley between chinatown, elysian park, and the art warehouse district. there was also a lovely view of downtown.

on saturday i took the mr. to show him some of the things on my christmas wish list {hooray for handmade!}. then sunday i went and met up with the lovely brandi from not your average ordinary & pizzelles, and i had the pleasure of meeting lillian from unstitched {her blog is gorgeous, by the way}. it was so great to meet a couple amazing blogger ladies in real life. both brandi and lillian are so sweet and fun! plus, they both brought cookies that they had baked. i now have the distinct pleasure of telling you that they are fabulous bakers. mmm!

unfortunately, i forgot to take my camera to the fair, so i only have one photo from sunday, which i will share due to the sheer absurdity of it. that's right folks. this is how i dressed on sunday, DECEMBER 12, outside!

{85 degrees. sorry to all of you who are currently snowed in. it's hard to remember it's winter in most places in the northern hemisphere.}

i also came across some new shops that i fell in love with at the fair. catia chien makes the most beautiful and emotional art {especially for my fellow child therapists}. by belinda has hilarious, creative, and charming greeting cards. the postage service has sweet letters with vintage, pre-stamped postage. and of course, boygirlparty did not disappoint with their super cute recipe cards and fold + mail stationary.

yup, it was a pretty fantastic weekend.
 yesterday i registered as a movie/tv extra.  i figured if i need a random job to make a little money in los angeles, it might as well be in the movie business.  we'll see if they like my face and pick me to stand in the background of stuff.  maybe you'll even get to see part of my arm in the background of chuck or glee! :)

i hope you all are having a lovely week so far!

it has been a fantastic week and i have so much to be thankful for!

* rocking the parallel parking all by myself {and becoming more comfortable driving again in general}.

* the super cold weather, which was the perfect opportunity to pull out my favorite cozy coat and hat!

* our christmas tree. it makes our house smell so dreamy! plus the twinkly lights at night make our home feel magical.

* chai lattes, which i may or may not have kept hidden from the mister. i worked hard to stop my addiction, but it just feels so right!

why hello there holidays!

so as you know, this past weekend was a long holiday weekend for all of us in the states. the mr. and i were lucky enough to get 2 whole thanksgiving dinners with family AND we got to have a fancy date ushering in the christmas season.

unfortunately i didn't take time from our ravenous dinner anticipation to capture many photos. i only have a few from thanksgiving dinner #2 which i snapped while we waited for the food to cook.

in all seriousness, we actually did have a great time with our families, despite our photographic evidence to the contrary.

{the words were finally uttered, "ok, don't look like you have low blood sugar!"}

****

saturday night we had ourselves a little decorating date. we picked up a wee tree, made ornaments from paper and felt, ate curry, drank cider, and listened to the best christmas radio station ever {big r radio ~ christmas classics station under the "eclectic" tab in itunes radio}. it was a blast!

{i made the stockings for the mr. and chloe cat, dannon made the one for me. isn't it great?!}

****

also, this weekend, i got my ornament in the mail from micaela's ornament exchange! i received a super cute bird from my fabulous exchange partner lauryn of laureality {who takes the BEST christmas photographs ever}. it fits so perfectly in our little tree like a treasure. thanks lauryn, i love it!!

and that was my long holiday weekend. this week i'm continuing the search for a job, getting christmas presents ready, and maybe baking some cookies!

i hope you all are off to a great week, and happy last day of november!
