a few years ago dannon and i heard an npr special late one night when we were working on an art project. it was the perfect mix of soul, bluegrass, and indie, all played on the cello! we were amazed and instantly in love with ben sollee's music. a few months later, ben came to san francisco to do a show at a small theatre by my house, so we went and hung out with him for a bit after. he's the nicest guy in the world, incredibly humble, and a fantastic musician. not to mention he's a huge environmental activist, choosing to tour the entire country by bicycle... with his cello in tow. yup, amazing.
do you guys remember that imaginary art space i built here on my blog last week?
well i've decided to throw a concert with ben sollee, and all of you are invited.
so put your dancing shoes on and get ready to have a blast!
and if you want to hear ben sollee in concert for real, check out his current tour dates.
he's even coming to the bootleg theatre here in LA! i know where i'll be on july 28.
happy wednesday everyone!
I have a definite appreciation for anyone who can play a string instrument. They're so challenging, but gorgeous when played well. The concert sounds like a fun idea!
ReplyDeleteI love the cello! If I could pick a string instrument to learn it might be the cello. :) I like deeper sounds and string instruments can be truly beautiful. I'll have to add some of this to my playlists!
ReplyDeleteHe's fantastic! :).
ReplyDeleteI've yet to hear him live, but want to soon!
Holy goodness! I love the sound of a cello, it's so... moving. And the fact that he's carrying that thing around the country while on a bike?! I am definitely going to check out his tour dates cuz if he's anywhere around me, I want to go and give him a big hug! Thanks for introducing me to such a great artist, Kim!
ReplyDeleteOMG, he sounds AMAZING! I am also a huge fan of stringed instruments (having played the violin--though not very well--for 8 years). He's actually playing Brooklyn tomorrow night but there's no way I can go :( Sad face. Thanks so much for introducing me to him--I always love to support new artists (and the fact that he's so eco-friendly is just awesome).
ReplyDeleteWow he's really amazing! Pretty!
ReplyDeleteAmazing! Thank you for sharing. I just love the cello. It is the most romantic and beautiful instrument to me.
ReplyDeleteSO lovely! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThis is so cool! I'll definitely check out his music. Small shows are the best, aren't they?
ReplyDeleteI just discovered Ben Sollee. this past year. I have two of his albums and they are so warm...so I am not surprised that he is rad.
ReplyDeletethis is just amazing!!! i've never heard of him before!
ReplyDeleteWhat?? He travels by bicycle....with his cello??? That is amazing! You have to admire a guy like that for sure!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to take a listen now! Based on your description, I'm sure I'll fall in love with his music. So, maybe I'll see you on the 28th! :)
Oh man! I heard his song "Bible Belt" on something NPR a few months back (All Things Considered, maybe?) and was smitten. Homeboy has quite the voice and way with lyrics!
ReplyDeleteCello I love the cello so much. One day I will dish out the money for one. Biking to his gigs that is so impressive. Thanks as always for the new music!
ReplyDeleteThat's amazing - I love when music is played so you can hear the music - you know. And his voice is just beautiful. Loved it, thanks for sharing this Kim, why am I not in San Francisco??
