professional style

being on the big search for a job, means that i think a lot about two things:
1. all the bills i'll get to pay with my paycheck {woohoo!}.
2. all the cute professional clothes i'll need to buy.

when i worked at my desk job, the one thing i really looked forward to was dressing up in professional, business-woman attire {well, okay, that and the awesome view from our downtown san francisco office}.  i loved having that daily excuse to look classy.  now that i'm a therapist, i have to be careful.  sure, i want to look professional, but i also want my overall appearance to be warm and inviting, not too harsh or businessy.  unfortunately, after 3 years working at a lawfirm, plus a couple more years of being a grad student, i don't have many clothes that fit this category.  so as part of my preparation for that future job of mine {and part of my attempt to kill time in a job-related manner} i have been looking for affordable therapist garb.
what have i found?

these are of course all from my favorite shop ruche, which has the warmest clothes {emotionally speaking}, all for very affordable prices {they also often have some of the same stuff as modcloth, only $10 cheaper. truth!}.  this week i have been feeling extra inspired with my job hunt.  hopefully soon i'll get to stop daydreaming and go shopping for some therapist clothes in real life!

do you get to dress up for work?
do you have a favorite shop for your professional wardrobe?

  1. Ayayai.. all these clothes are great and my favourite is the one where the model is wearing the floppy hat.

Still crossing my fingers for you Kim. Sending good vibes all the way. When that day comes, please let us all know. Never give up

  2. Love these clothes!
I don't get to dress up for work, we have an uniform (well a shirt) so I just wear my jeans with it... really boring, but also kinda of nice, because you can head out the door pretty fast!

  4. I really love the selection at ruche and know exactly what you mean about "warm" clothes. I have been trying to be more conscious of building a stylish and comfortable wardrobe that is versatile enough to get dirty in the classroom but chic enough to make me feel good. Easier said than done! Lately, I've been craving girly dresses, probably because I'm usually in jeans and a tee.

  5. Ruche has some of the prettiest photo shoots! You're going to be a beautiful therapist, for sure! :) And I miss getting dressed up every day for work, too.. was just thinking about how I miss it the other day. Hopefully, like you, I'll have occasion to dress up (hah.. you know what I mean) soon!

  6. I love all these. I've been wanting more dresses. I miss my 'work' clothes, but I'm also over my 'mom' clothes. I think this will be the summer if dresses!

  7. I love all of the belted waists! So feminine and adorable! Personally I cannot stay away from the Banana Republic outlet store. It's dangerous.

  8. Ruche officially has the best clothes! They are definitely appropriate for your new job once you stop searching. I can just see the green and white dress (second from the bottom) on cute little you with a cropped jacket.

When I was younger, all I wanted to be was one of those ladies who went to a job where she dressed up in business suits. Now on my path to being a teacher, that's the last thing I want to do! :)

  9. I love the last outfit, so professional and chic (well, all of them are).

I rarely find the energy to wear dressy clothes to work "even though I work at a desk job." The problem is that I am the only one in the building. I have keys to the place and I rarely see anybody. My job consists of phone calls and commercial flooring estimates so I only make human contact via phone or email.

  10. I'm so lucky in that I can wear my jeans to work but I always wear a nice smart top, something I feel professional in. I love your choices

  11. Kim, I can so see you in all of these outfits! And going back to the professional world and getting to wear cute clothes again is one thing I'm looking forward to as well. I want lots of dresses and cute shoes. Right now, as a grad student, I wear jeans. A lot. Almost every day. It stinks.

  12. I totally agree with Brandi - I could see you in all of these! You are one who can pull off any cute outfit! :) These are definitely so warm + inviting!
I don't dress up often for work (only when the mood strikes, which, I'm sad to say, isn't often). But I really should. Why not get excited about dressing up for work, right? :)

  13. I work in the mental health field, and on days I meet with parents the above outfits would be right, but some of the kids I see for one-on-one I need some sensible shoes haha! I go day to day by who is on my schedule.

  14. I love Ruche! Their dresses are too short for me though. I love my job but sometimes I would love to wear smart professional clothes like here and not leotards and tights all day long. But again, I love what I do so I can't complain.

  15. Man I wish! I wear a uniform to work and it's SO boring - short sleeved button up which shirt and black pants. Lame.

  16. I worked in a pretty low key office where it wasn't unusual for the CEO to wear her biking gear for most of the day.

I did try to make a difference between work clothes and weekend clothes.

These outfits are ADORABLE. And from the pictures you've posted on your blog just scream KIM to me.

  17. Lol. I am with you on this. I am fantasizing about my "new" apt. I love ruche. One of my favorite dresses is from there. I am so ready to move to the next phase of life. Thank you be so awesome and inspiring!

  18. you are a ruche girl through and through!! i can see you in so many, if not all, of these outfits. i work primarily from home so don't have to dress up much - but when i do have to there is no messing around.

i shop at club monaco for a lot of staples with a little zing. they have cut things with a zip of personality and i am all about the personality factor :)

  19. One great thing about working in Costa Rica is that although I have to dress up for work, it is not the stuffy, serious suits that US law firms require... Mostly I get to wear clothes that could easily fit in a nice resort vacation, haha. As far as favorite stores I really love J.Crew for work staples and I love mixing some of my thrift store finds into my office work wear as well.

Lovely shop btw! I am dying over that second dress!
