good deeds ~ levi's waterless jeans

i first read about levi's waterless jeans a couple month's ago on eva's blog, four leaf clover, and i am so excited to finally share it with you all!

levi's jeans have dedicated themselves to not only conserve water through a revolutionary waterless washing process in their factory, but to also provide clean drinking water to people living in impoverished areas.  through their new manufacturing techniques {which you can learn more about on their website}, they are able to save about 28-96% of their regular water usage during the manufacturing of their
jeans {depending on the product}.  that translates into a savings of 16 million liters of
water during manufacturing this spring alone!

but levi's can't conserve water all on their own.  in an effort to help conserve water after their jeans have found a home in your closet, they've created a campaign encouraging all of us to care for our jeans in sustainable ways.  and might i add, this campaign is hilarious as well as informative.

hopefully, other clothing companies will adopt similar practices in near the future.  in the meantime, we can help by taking into consideration the ways in which we use our water {especially those of us living in the desert}.  and by the way, does the thought of washing your jeans every week seem crazy to anyone else?
i mean, how dirty can they really get in a week? not to mention the fact that washing your jeans
weekly wears them out and fades the color faster.  i'm going to choose to be a dirty girl
and help conserve water by waiting as long as possible to wash my jeans,
 how about you?

  1. Excellent! You've just confirmed my theory... dirty jeans are way cooler than shiny, clean ones. I like to wear mine for ages before I wash them. Gives them that worn (in a good way) look... am I right?

  2. This is a great post, fresh water is becoming a huge issue and it's great to see a company pick up on that and alter their practices. Thanks for posting this.

  3. I agree with Erin, the jeans are much better after being worn a few days...

  4. I think my husband should be their poster boy. I think he waits until his jeans have legs of their own and walk themselves to the washer!

  5. I feel less bad about wearing my jeans for ages before washing them "thanks to you of course." I like how they feel after being worn for a few days :)

  6. I think this ad campaign is one of the most brilliant ones I've seen in a long time. Hopefully it catches on and people learn. Every company needs to start taking steps like these. They so add up. I only wash my jeans if I spill something on them or if they stretch to the point that they start getting a bit loose on me.

  7. Speaking of conserving water, the hubs and I were just talking about how the new Minnesota Twins stadium saves tons of water every year. It's supposed to be the best stadium for water conservation. How cool is that?

  8. What a wonderful cause! I'm the same as you too, Kim - I wear my jeans as long as possible (meaning, as long as I don't sweat or get them dirty or spill something on them :). And not just my jeans, but any of my clothes - if they don't feel dirty, I think they could be worn a few more times before thrown in the wash! :)

  10. i've always tried to wash my jeans as little as possible - i hate the tight and rigid feel of a freshly washed pair. glad i've been eco-friendly without even realizing it all these years :-)

  13. I've learned a lot about water conservation in Australia. Like a LOT.

I also did some research for one of the places I volunteer about Gap Jeans. Gap takes old torn jeans and turns them into insulation. AWESOME.

  14. Ah! Yay - thanks for mentioning me, Kim!! I'm so glad you liked this enough to write about it on your own blog. I think they've added a couple new posters since I last checked out their site. You've even given ME a reminder to stop washing as much! Also... I LOVE everyone's comments on this post! Brilliant to see so many people aren't fanatic about washing after only a single time of wearing something!

  15. K.. I'll be a dirty gal.. at least, I'll try really really hard.

This is a really cool way to encourage water conservation. Levi's did a great job. Love those ads, especially the yellow/mellow one. Took me a while to get it :)

  17. You are right those ads are so funny. I like the fish wearing jeans.
on the whole jean washing topic - I dont want to wash my jeans so often, but the regular jeans get mega soggy otherwise and I'm too modest for skinny jeans hehe.
    ps. how'd the show go!!

  19. I'm so inspired to not wash my jeans. Dirty can be fun and cool!

This post struck pretty close to home as my mom and I have a new system where we keep a bucket of water in the shower to fill it up as you wait for the cold water to turn to hot water. Every day we fill at least two buckets which is enough to basically water the entire garden. It's been a really great to see how much can be saved and used when normally it just goes down the drain. Great post as always, Kim!

  20. I hadn't heard about this before, but I love it! I always try to go as long as possible between washes when I can get away with it. I love what Levi's is doing to preserve clean drinking water! It's such a huge issue that most people don't even think about!

  21. Oh, I love this ad campaign so very much. What an important message to send.

I agree with you. I'm a big fan of wearing my jeans in properly and don't wash them as often as I probably should but they just fit much more comfortably when they're worn in :)
