7 favorite films

last week, the lovely anya, of anya adores, gave me a blogger award.  have you been to her blog yet?  she's new to the blogging world, but she has such a beautiful blog {and she's such a sweet gal} that it's quickly becoming a favorite.  anyhow, receiving a blogger award means sharing 7 facts about me.  however, since i already shared 7 random facts about me not too long ago, i thought i would do something a little more specific this time around.  yesterday someone asked me if i have any good movie recommendations, so i thought i would take this opportunity to share 7 of my favorite films {7 out of about 50, mind you}.

so in no particular order, 7 of my favorite films are:

in the "awesome-message-for-little-and-grown-up-girls-alike" category:
penelope
the clothes and set design are just out-of-this-world amazing! i'm ready to move into that movie and make it my home.  plus, it's a fairytale with a really great message, as opposed to all those old disney fairytales that teach little girls they need a big strong man to rescue them. nope, this one is far more positive, simple, and sweet.  ...and adorable!

in the "teaching great life lessons" category:
big fish
it's been years since i saw this, but when it first came out i was in college and discovering a lot of things about life.  i remember this movie gave me so much to think about that i ended up journaling and making notes of my thoughts afterward.  there are truly dozens of gems of wisdom in this film.

in the "classic love story that gets recited at every wedding" category:
the princess bride
oh man, i can't recall how many times i've seen this movie over the years, and i still love it!  sure, it's totally silly and absurd, but it will always have a special place in my heart.  a couple of our dear friends are even screening this the night before their wedding for all their guests to enjoy!

in the "possibly my favorite movie of all time" category:
the goonies
when i was little i would daydream about having all sorts of wild adventures, so when i saw this movie i thought it was a dream come true.  now that i'm all grown up, things haven't changed a whole lot!  i still watch this movie periodically with the thrill of a kid {and i always, always, check for secret passages in fireplaces}.

in the "how could anyone not have this movie on their favorites list?" category:
 amelie
i probably don't need to explain this one at all.  i'm sure you completely get why this is a favorite, but i'll just say this movie is absolutely beautiful in every single way, and i always feel happier & inspired after watching it.

in the "touch your heart in a deeper way" category:
the darjeeling limited
this is one of the most beautiful looks at grief and loss that i have ever seen in a movie.  the pain is there, but there's also a sense of hope, an understanding that the healing process doesn't happen overnight, but also that the pain won't last forever.  overall, it's amazing.

in the "family is super complicated" category:
little miss sunshine
i adore this ragtag adventure about a fairly dysfunctional family.  i mean, i think we all know how complicated family dynamics can be, but what i love about this movie is that this family still knows how to love and support each other, no matter what. so sweet!

and because i was having a super hard time deciding which seven i would share, here are a few others at the top of the list:

the royal tenenbaums, napoleon dynamite, scott pilgrim vs. the world, donnie darko, being john malkovich, black swan, lars & the real girl, juno, inception, (500) days of summer, youth in revolt, strange brew, fight club, and the mystery science theatre 3000 movies.

what are some of your favorite films?

  3. I am SO glad you included Penelope and The Princess Bride in this list! Those are two of my favorites (and the costumes for Penelope are absolutely amazing).

  4. It's really odd that you posted this because I have seen all of those movies quite recently AND I love them all so very much. Although, I having seen "the darjeeling limited".... it's just been added to my netflix cue.

I'd have to say that one of my favorite disfunctional family films would be... The Family Stone. For one particular reason, if my mother had 5 children instead of 2, that is EXACTLY what our household would be like.

  5. 500 days of summer and inception make it to my top 10. I can't believe I haven't watched any of the ones you listed, except for Amelie & little miss sunshine

  7. Oh thanks so much Kim - I really appreciate your kind words!!
And with regards to your films you have got me ticking all the boxes with Amelie, (named my 1st daughter Audrey after MS. Hepburn/ Tatou) little miss sunshine - is exactly that, BIG FISH - I adore it. And the Goonies from my youth - yay. I am afraid to say I haven't seen the others, but will be sure to look for them. MY fave film of all time either Viva la vida (italian - AMAZING) or for the feel good factor: A good year - just because I wouldn't mind living in Provence!! Thanks again - you always make my day :O)
    A xx

  14. !!!!! I'm so excited to see this because so many are my faves too!!! :) I loved Penelope (so cute...I'm such a sucker for fairy tales), Big Fish (Tim Burton, always a genius), The Goonies (a classic!), and Amelie of course, (that goes without saying!). Little Miss Sunshine was really cute too - such a feel good movie. Whew, okay, a few more for me - Stardust, Love Actually, Julie & Julia, Hook, Good Will Hunting.

    P.S. You're awesome, Kim :)

  16. That's a good list! I love The Princess Bride. I like to wander around sometimes saying, "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die!" My hubby thinks I'm crazy. Also love Amelie {Parisian perfection} and Little Miss Sunshine {Steve Carrell is awesome, isn't he?} I love that photo from The Goonies! Look at Sean Astin! So little!

I have to confess that there are a few there I haven't seen. I'm especially interested in The Darjeeling Limited and 500 Days of Summer.

Other favourites of mine include: Sliding Doors, Love Actually, Good Will Hunting, The King's Speech...

  18. So I Married an Axe Murderer, Little Women, and The Little Princess.

You have great picks! Love Goonies!

  19. I totally agree with you about The Goonies - it is such a classic. I also get lost in Top Gun (yes cheeseball fest), Foot Loose, Pretty in Pink, Weird Science...I'm an 80's mess.

But one that always stays close to my dvd player is Lars and the Real Girl. I've watched it at least 20x and it always speaks the truth of the human spirit to me. I just love it. And Up in the Air. And Juno. Ahhh Juno. I do love the movies. this was a great post Kimbirdy.

  20. Wow, our tastes in movies are VERY similar. Must watch Penelope, haven't seen that one yet (and have heard great things). Little Miss Sunshine is a movie I could watch over and over. The scene with the horn on the van has me rollin' each time. So many great moments!

  21. I loved your list. And I agree--how could Amelie not make it to anyone's top list? I love all heist movies, so Thomas Crown Affair (the remake) would make it on mine.

Some of my favourites are High Fidelity, Singing in the Rain, and Say Anything...

  28. Such excellent choices, Kim! If I hadn't already met you in person, this post would only confirm our compatibility even further. I have some guilty pleasure favorites: The Cutting Edge and Sky High. They're just fun and remind me of parts of my youth.

  29. What a beautiful list.
Although reading it makes me a little tad sad - even though I have the word Darjeeling in my blog's name, I've never watched 'The Darjeeling Limited'. Or 'Penelope'.
My favorites: Notorious, Rebecca (I like Hitchcock), almost anything by Bertolucci, In the Mood for Love, 2046, Last Life in the Universe...I have a thing for pretty cinematography too...and I would definitely agree with (500) of Summer, Little Miss Sunshine, Amelie, and I feel that Big Fish is very under-appreciated.

  30. Yeay! for Goonies and of course Amelie.
Im a fan of Eternal Sunshine like some other commenters. BUT my favorite movie of all times... Ghostbusters haha!

Good pick on Donny Darko - I just saw that recently and even though it had that 90s vibe I really loved it. Some of my other favorites:Back to the Future, Indiana Jones Last Crusade, Shawshank Redemption, Fried Green Tomatoes, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Requiem for Dream, Dead Poets Society, and fight club too

  31. Wow, four of your seven are way up there for me too: goonies, amelie, little mrs sunshine and most of all daarjeling! Some other favorites for me are "Y Tu Mama Tambien" and "Adaptation", I highly recommend them specially since we seem to share a similar taste :)
